How do hydrologists perceive watersheds? A survey and analysis of perceptual model figures for experimental watersheds

چکیده
Abstract To describe process knowledge at the watershed scale, hydrologists commonly refer to a ‘perceptual model’, an expert summary of and its runoff processes often supported by field observations. Perceptual models are presented as schematic figure, although such figure will necessarily simplify hydrologist's complex mental model. In this paper, our aim was understand what constitutes visual knowledge, evaluate how perceptual could be used share hydrological information larger scales. do so, we conducted systematic review literature found 63 model figures. We counted categorized stores fluxes in each using taxonomic classification quantified variety attributes including spatial or temporal zonation, inclusion vegetation, soils, topographical geological data consideration uncertainty. Our analysis showed that typical has 1 surface flux, 4 subsurface fluxes, 3–4 0–1 channel stores; 28 out figures use sub‐figures show dynamics (e.g., wet/dry conditions), 12 zones. figures, therefore, provide concise with complexity comparable many conceptual models. However, only four any on uncertainty gaps. recommend value easily increased consistent captioning assist automated search, wider standard annotations legends scale markings ensure is fully conveyed user. If proposed primary method for sharing information, community should consider link more detailed text descriptions represent

Kinematic runoff and erosion model efficiency assessment for hydrological simulation of semi-arid watersheds
Hydrologic modeling of semi-arid watersheds is imperative for the development of appropriate water and soil conservation plans. In the current study, the efficiency of Kinematic Runoff and Erosion model-version 2 (K2) model was used to evaluate water discharge and sediment load simulation of Bar watershed, located in the north-eastern part of Iran. The K2 model relies on the kinematic wave appr...
متن کاملPerceptual Anchor or Attractor: How Do Musicians Perceive Raga Phrases?
A raga performance in Hindustani vocal music builds upon a melodic framework wherein raga-characteristic phrases are presented with creative variations while strongly retaining their identity. It is therefore of interest, for both music information retrieval and pedagogy, to understand better the space of “allowed” variations of the melodic motifs. Our recent study of melodic shapes correspondi...
متن کاملScaling relations for watersheds.
We study the morphology of watersheds in two and three dimensional systems subjected to different degrees of spatial correlations. The response of these objects to small, local perturbations is also investigated with extensive numerical simulations. We find the fractal dimension of the watersheds to generally decrease with the Hurst exponent, which quantifies the degree of spatial correlations....
متن کاملUltrametric Watersheds
We study hierachical segmentation in the framework of edgeweighted graphs. We define ultrametric watersheds as topological watersheds null on the minima. We prove that there exists a bijection between the set of ultrametric watersheds and the set of hierarchical edgesegmentations.
